Overview
In my second 441 Design Communication class, I needed to pick from a list of various countries from all over the world to base the messaging and visuals for a coffee shop. This project focused on the line between “Cultural Appreciation” and “Cultural Appropriation”, showing us how to work with the symbols and ideas of a culture while emphasizing respectful, informed representation of it.

Approach & Deliverables
For my project, I chose Portugal! Inspired by Portugal's warm and colorful cultural aesthetic, imagery of ornately painted tiles (azulejos), and most of all their beautiful music genre "Fado", I created a visual identity, a series of (3) coffee bags, and a 100 page investor's lookbook for the brand. Fado is a form of music characterized by mournful tunes and lyrics, often about the sea or the life of the poor, and infused with a sense of resignation, melancholy, and can even be more passionate and emotional. I felt that the communal nature of the music combined with its generally softer quality would make for a really interesting foundation to build the narrative of a brand from.
